If you haven’t yet read our Bondage 101, click here, it has all the important rules and basic information you should know! Once you’ve read that, you’re ready for some intermediate bondage techniques! More than just tying your partner up and having sex, there are many things you can do to liven up your sex life and make it even more interesting!

Intermediate Bondage Techniques

All of these techniques work both with bondage and without, depending on your partners comfort level!

Temperature Play

Temperature play is very popular, and involves using different temperatures to stimulate the body for a sensual effect. The best thing to do is to use both hot and cold in unpredictable patterns.

You can use ice, warm oil, melted wax, or food items like chocolate sauce or whipped cream from the fridge! Another popular option is using glass toys to drive your partner wild! A blindfold is often used to intensify the effect.

Make sure to get candles that are specifically made for use on the skin, as household candles have different burning points and could burn the skin.

Using them is easy! Light the wick, wait for the wax to burn down and drip it onto the skin! You can get drip candles that are designed to harden on the skin for affect, or massage candles that turn into a warm oil.

Glass toys can both be warmed and cooled! Just make sure not to go from extreme temperatures quickly or the glass might crack! Let the toy come to room temperature first before putting it in opposite temperatures!

Submerge glass toys in either a bowl of ice water or warm water (never boiling) for 10 – 15 minutes before use!

Tip: Use cold or warm objects on less sensitive areas, such as the arm or leg before moving to more intimate areas to make sure your partner is okay with the temperature!

Sensory Play

Sensory Play works both by stimulating physically as well as psychologically. When one or more senses are removed, the others are heightened. It adds anticipation and fires up the body making everything feel much more intense! Sensory play works amazing with bondage, because in addition to having one or more senses taken away, the person is restrained and have little movement. This can be exciting for some!

The most popular form of sensory play – using a blindfold to take away sight can increase sensation and excitability. The person blindfolded can’t see what is going on, and must rely on touch or their hearing to determine what’s happening around them.

Sight is not the only sense that you can remove during play. Putting headphones over your partners ears to either a) cancel out sound, or b) play music, can also take away their ability to hear as well. This leaves them vulnerable, unable to discern where the next touch will come from, and is popular when combined with blindfolds!

Pleasure and Pain

Some people have the misconception that BDSM and bondage are paired exclusively with pain, and while that might be true for some it’s not an entirely factual statement. Pleasure and pain go hand in hand! Pain causes your nerve endings to become more alert, and thus makes pleasurable sensations more satisfying!

For the best results, use both pleasure and pain interchangeably! Start with pleasurable sensations, and gradually lead to brief interludes of pain, followed by more pleasurable sensations! Tools can be useful for a variety of different sensations!

Paddles give a very similar feeling as a hand does because it’s broad and flat. However depending on the material it’s made from and other factors such as bumps, grooves and shapes, it can give other sensations as well! Great to help preventing numbness in the hand from spanking!

Floggers warm up the skin to make it ready for other sensations! Flogging isn’t all about pain, and can be put into two basic groups. Floggers that sting, and floggers that thud. Generally, the fewer the strips, the more sting it will provide, but it’s also dependent on things such as material and weight. A thick, suede flogger is great for beginners as it provides gentle thuds with pressure.
